Kevin Hildebrand, Director of Research Technology and High Performance Computing (HPC) Services

Kevin Hildebrand moved into a new role as the Director of Research Technology and High Performance (HPC) services in May 2025 for the Division of IT at the University of Maryland.  Previously, as an HPC architect, Kevin was responsible for the design, construction, operation, and support of high-performance computing clusters. In addition to his duties with HPC, Kevin will now oversee UMD’s research team, which aims to aid in campus research endeavors providing program support and data security consultation.

Kevin has 26 years of experience in Unix systems administration, and 15 years of experience building five separate HPC clusters. The latest, Zaratan, provided a significant leap in computational capacity to the university when it was deployed in July 2022.

After graduating from the University with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering in 1991, Kevin has remained at Maryland with the exception of a five year period from 2000-2005 where he worked for a small company focused on bringing the internet to third world countries.
