Core Services

MAX engineers work closely with participants to provide the best services and maintain high reliability.

Layer 1: Optical Lambda Transport Over DWDM Gear – 10G/100G/400G

MAX can provide a point-to-point optically-protected Layer 1 connection between any two points on our network. This is 100% dedicated bandwidth between your devices. The provided optical protection has a near instantaneous switchover time so a fiber cut within the MAX optical footprint would be transparent to your service. If you have a need to connect beyond the mid-Atlantic region, we can also work with you to provide a nationwide lambda transport solution

Layer 2: Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) Transport – 1G/10G

This is similar to Layer 1 but uses MPLS Layer 2 VPNs to transport your traffic from end to end. We can provide VLANs across your existing ports to connect your locations together, or we can provide dedicated interfaces. The traffic goes across our non-oversubscribed 400G backbone, ensuring your frames get from end to end. We can work with your requirements for a national scope via Internet2 to connect you to your research partners in other regions.

Layer 3: Research and Education (R&E) Services Port

Layer 3 R&E connections offer high speed network connectivity that enable the customer to leverage MAX’s and Internet2’s network resources. A MAX customer selects a membership tier based on their expected peak utilization rate for all traffic on their connection.  1Gbps memberships can be provisioned on either a 1GE or 10GE port, depending on how much traffic burst is expected. 10Gbps, 100Gbps, and 400Gbps memberships will be provisioned on matching ports.

In addition, MAX customers subscribing to the L3 product also have access to Internet2’s “I2CC” Cloud Connect service via additional VLANs configured across their port.  This is included at no additional charge and can be provisioned as either L2 (direct end-to-end path between MAX customer and cloud provider routers) or L3 (MAX customer and multiple cloud providers in a private L3VPN).  I2CC provides access to the major cloud vendor direct access products (Amazon AWS “Direct Connect”, Google Cloud “Partner Interconnect”, Microsoft Azure “ExpressRoute” and Oracle “FastConnect”) on either a shared or dedicated cloud-facing port basis.

Note that there is no additional charge for commit rates for an individual customer to an individual cloud provider at aggregate speeds of less than or equal to 5Gbps, but above that level a paid dedicated port to access that cloud provider at those speeds would be required. Charges for services from the individual cloud providers are the responsibility of the customer.

Colocation

If you have a need to collocate equipment, we can either collocate it for you directly in one of our locations, or coordinate on your behalf with our existing collocation providers around the region.

Commodity Internet Services

MAX resells a blended commodity Internet service procured from multiple Internet service providers as a value-add service for R&E customers. These providers are all blended together on the MAX network and redistributed as a single combined service to customers. MAX provides this commodity Internet service across an additional VLAN and BGP peering on the customer’s existing connection. This blended service offers highly redundant and diversified access to the Internet.

Cloud Service Connection

MAX has acquired cloud service access and is offering it to its current and future participants. Customers will receive connection to major providors such as Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google cloud and more.

A benefit to procuring these services through MAX is that we will monitor invoices and usage from these vendors on behalf of the customer. You can receive our core services and any value-added services knowing the MAX team is dedicated to simplifying your procurement process.

DDoS Mitigation Services

MAX offers a cloud-based volumetric DDoS scrubbing service. The service is a valuable tool that helps customers protect their networks from the increasing threat of DDoS attacks. Radware, the commercial provider chosen for this service, has terabits of network capacity dedicated to mitigating DDoS attacks. When hosts on a customer’s network come under attack, this service can be used to redirect all traffic destined for affected hosts to the Radware network where the traffic is “scrubbed,” allowing only legitimate non-attack traffic to be returned to its intended destination over the customer’s MAX connection. Radware also offers an optional service that monitors the customer’s border routers and will initiate DDoS scrubbing automatically.

Service Levels:
Standard: Includes Tenant Service allowing customers to peer directly with Radware and access their SOC and customer portal.
Optional: Radware Monitored Router Service allows Radware to automatically engage DDoS scrubbing when necessary.
